What to do if Your Car Overheats

A car can overheat no matter what time of the year it is, and when it does it can cause damage to the engine if it's not taken care of in a timely manner. If you're ever in a situation where your car begins to overheat you should follow these tips:

  1. Turn off the engine. Pull over to a safe place and open the hood to let the engine cool down.
  2. Don't try to remove the radiator cap, the pressure could cause it to blow off.
  3. Don't try to touch or fix anything until the engine has cooled off completely.
  4. Once the engine has cooled add some coolant.
  5. Do a visual inspection of the hoses to check for leaks and/or blockages. There is normally a reason why your car is overheating.
  6. Once you're able to start driving again closely monitor the temperature gauge. If the engine starts running hot again, pull over to a safe place and turn the engine off.
  7. You may need to call roadside assistance if you can't keep your car cool enough to get it to a service center.
